WHY DOES CONTAINER DAMAGE OCCUR?
Container damage often occurs during the handling process (loading, shipping, and unloading). Common causes include:
- Material Overstressing: Improper stacking or loading can bend containers.
- Inexperienced Handling: Forklift operators can drop, stack unevenly, or puncture containers.
- Incorrect Container Choice: Using a wrong container type (e.g., a dry container for temperature-sensitive goods) can lead to damage.
- Overloading or Uneven Distribution: Excessive weight or improper placement of cargo can cause cracks or holes.
- Extreme Weather: Harsh conditions at sea can lead to corrosion and rust.
- Container Contamination: Previous cargo can leave behind unpleasant odors or pests, making the container unsuitable for future use.
WHY IS CONTAINER REPAIR IMPORTANT?
- Protecting goods: Preventing damage to cargo.
- Reducing costs: Avoiding expensive repairs in the long run.
- Extending lifespan: Increasing the container’s useful life.
- Maintaining certification: Ensuring the container remains eligible for transport.
- Maximizing value: Preserving the container’s resale value.
WHY IS CONTAINER INSPECTION NEEDED?
Frequent inspections are crucial to identify and address issues early. Check for damage to the container’s structure, doors, seals, and hinges. For reefer containers, annual expert inspections are recommended.
ARE THERE ANY STANDRDS AND REGULATIONS FOR CONTAINERS?
To minimize container damage and promote sustainability, various organizations have developed repair standards:
IICL: In collaboration with the International Chamber of Shipping, the IICL has created a comprehensive standard for container repairs, detailing repair procedures for all components.
UCIRC: UCIRC classifies container damage based on severity and determines acceptable and unacceptable limits. It ensures containers remain operational with minimal repairs.
CIC: The COA provides an overview of different damages and repair methods without specifying procedures. It aims to reduce unnecessary repairs and improve container handling.
ACEP: ACEP members are required to conduct regular maintenance and repairs independently. The CSC plate indicates ACEP membership.
What industry standards does ROMALEXIS comply with?
Boxcare complies with IICL (The Institute of International Container Lessors) standards. All containers are inspected as per IICL 6 standards unless specified by the customer.
Proper inspections are carried out by Boxcare before sale of the container and are given CSC (Container Safety Convention) certification once all checks are completed.
What does CSC mean?
Convention for safe containers. Created in 1972, the purpose focused on two goals:
- To ensure a high level of safety of human life in the transport and handling of containers.
- To facilitate the international transport of containers by providing uniform international safety regulations, equally applicable to all modes of surface transport.
HOW MANY CONTAINER TYPES EXIST?
A brief overview of different shipping container types and their uses:
Standard Dry Containers: These are the most common type of containers used for general cargo. They are fully enclosed and weatherproof, with a rigid roof, sidewalls, and floor.
Refrigerated Containers (Reefers): These containers are used for transporting perishable goods that need to be kept at a specific temperature, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and pharmaceuticals.
Open Top Containers: These containers have a removable top, making them ideal for cargo that is too tall to fit into a standard container, such as machinery or large equipment.
Flat Rack Containers: These containers have collapsible sides, allowing for the transport of oversized cargo that won’t fit into a standard container, like vehicles, boats, or industrial equipment.
Tank Containers: These are used for transporting liquids, gases, and powders. They are made of strong steel or other anti-corrosive materials to ensure safe transport of hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
High Cube Containers: These containers are similar to standard dry containers but are taller, providing extra space for bulky cargo.
Ventilated Containers: These containers are used for cargo that requires ventilation, such as coffee beans or other agricultural products.
Insulated Containers: These containers are used for goods that need to be kept at a consistent temperature but do not require refrigeration, such as certain chemicals or food products.
DOES CONTAINER HAVE DIFFERENT SIZES?
- 20-Foot Containers:Internal Dimensions: 5.9 m long, 2.4 m wide, 2.4 m high.
Usage: These are the most common and versatile containers, used for transporting a wide range of goods. They are ideal for smaller shipments and can be easily handled and stored. - 40-Foot Containers:
Internal Dimensions: 12.0 m long, 2.4 m wide, 2.4 m high.
Usage: These containers are twice the length of 20-foot containers and are used for larger shipments. They are commonly used for transporting bulky or heavy items, such as machinery or large quantities of goods. - 45-Foot Containers:
Internal Dimensions: 13.5 m long, 2.4 m) wide, 2.6 m high.
Usage: These containers provide extra space compared to 40-foot containers and are used for transporting oversized cargo. They are often used for shipping large items that require additional room. - High Cube Containers:
Internal Dimensions: Available in 40-foot and 45-foot lengths, with an internal height of 2.7 m.
Usage: These containers are taller than standard containers, providing extra vertical space. They are used for transporting bulky or tall items that require additional height. - 10-Foot Containers:
Internal Dimensions: 2.8 m long, 2.4 m wide, 2.4 m high.
Usage: These smaller containers are used for transporting smaller shipments or for storage purposes. They are ideal for businesses or individuals with limited space or smaller cargo needs.
